WWDC 2014: Mit iOS 8 wird T-Mobile beim iPhone auch Telefonieren über WiFi ermöglichen

In den USA hat T-Mobile gestern nach der Apple Keynote bekannt gegeben, dass man in Zukunft Wi-Fi Calling auch beim iPhone unterstützen wird. Für T-Mobile erklärte Chief Marketing Officer Mike Sievert dazu im  Insights Blog folgendes:

„Now – with the news coming out of Apple’s keynote today that Wi-Fi Calling will be enabled with iOS 8 – I’m excited to welcome our iPhone customers to the convenience and ease of T-Mobile Wi-Fi Calling as well. When that happens, over 90 percent of all T-Mobile smartphones will feature Wi-Fi Calling.“

Eigentlich sind wir davon ausgegangen, dass T-Mobile solch ein Feature eher ausbremsen wird, schließlich wird für manche iPhone-Nutzer mit WiFi-Telefonie ein Sprachtarif wohl überflüssig werden.

Ob T-Mobile in Deutschland mit iOS 8 ebenfalls VoIP über WiFi ermöglichen wird, ist im Moment noch völlig unklar. Auf der offiziellen Hilfe-Website war man jedenfalls auf entsprechende Kundenanfragen zu WiFi-Calling mit dem iPhone noch nicht vorbereitet – und vermutete einfach mal, dass die ratsuchenden Kunden wohl WLAN-Telefonie mit HomeTalk meinten…

Auf der WWDC hat Apple außerdem noch angkündigt, dass man in Zukunft mit OS X Yosemite auch iPhone-Telefonate auf einem Mac annehmen oder tätigen kann. Ein Mac als Freisprecheinrichtung – nette Vorstellung. Auf allen Apple-Geräten werden zudem SMS- und MMS-Nachrichten angezeigt, die zuvor ausschließlich auf dem iPhone erschienen sind.

Ihr versteht das alle Falsch! Es wird über den bestehenden Tarif telefoniert, aber statt übers Netzbetreiber Signal dann halt über WLAN.
Kosten bleiben die gleichen, nur das man so überall Empfang hat, wo mach auch WLAN mit Internetverbindung hat. (Keller zB)

Ok – wir haben den amerikanischen T-Mobile Manager evt. nicht ausreichend zitiert. Außerdem schrieb Sievert noch folgendes über Wi-Fi Calling:

„T-Mobile provides Wi-Fi Calling capabilities to far more customers than any other major U.S. wireless provider. (…) One of the best things about T-Mobile Wi-Fi Calling is that it’s so simple to use. You don’t need to activate anything or download a special app. Just connect to any available Wi-Fi network, check that Wi-Fi Calling is turned on on your capable smartphone, and make a call (or send a text, email, etc.) as you normally would. That’s it.“

Zur Telefonie über das Internet noch deutlicher im T-Mobile Fact Sheet:

„Wi-Fi Calling allows customers to make and receive calls and messages as well as access data over a wireless internet connection. Using Wi-Fi Calling is easy. Simply connect to an available Wi-Fi network, confirm Wi-Fi Calling is enabled on your capable smartphone and continue to make a call or send a text as you would over a cellular connection.“

Das mit Wi-Fi Calling die Kosten steigen, haben wir nicht behauptet – und wurde auch vom Chief Marketing Officer nicht angedeutet. Zu künftigen Kosten und Tarifen machte Sievert in seinem Blogpost für das iPhone keine Angaben.
